Frequently Asked Questions

All couples fight and our affection for each other can rise and fall. Life circumstances might be stressful, or you might be discovering new parts of yourself while your partner has remained the same. This can be normal and temporary. But when you feel stuck, and frustrated by repeating old patterns, then it is worthwhile attending couple’s therapy.
-
If your partner does not want to attend, it is best not to try and force them. Even if they come to sessions, they probably will not be in a place where they can offer the vulnerability needed to work on the relationship. Partners have different reasons for not wanting to come to therapy and if they are not ready, that is their choice. Instead of focusing on them, it would be far more fruitful for you to channel your energy into seeking the support you need to move forward, and often individual therapy can be really helpful with this.
-
No, a couple’s therapist works very hard to stay impartial. Their aim is to care for the relationship. Although sessions might sometimes land with more focus on one partner than the other, this is only in service of the relationship, not because the therapist cares for one partner more than the other.
-
Yes, we call it discernment therapy. And where it can be helpful is clearing the noise so that you can actually gauge whether the desire to separate is coming from a sense of helplessness or frustration, or from a grounded sense of knowing that the relationship is not working.
-
This depends entirely on the couple. Some couples need to work through a recent issue that has surfaced and that both are committed to addressing and resolving. Other couples are under great stress, have past trauma and are finding themselves in intense and frequent altercations or feelings of loneliness and despair. They might first need support stabilising, then learning new skills and integrating them into the relationship before they are ready to create a new relationship that serves their needs.
-
Yes, couple’s therapy is confidential. As with individual therapy, this is guaranteed unless there is concern that one or both partners will hurt themselves or someone else.
